Question of the Week: In an effort to improve communication we will start having a “Question of the Week”. If you have a question please email it to [email protected]. Then one of the questions submitted will be drawn to be addressed in the following week’s Viking View. Questions cannot involve personal situations among students, staff, or parents. They should be general in nature and related to public information.
This week’s question: Why does it seem like athletic schedules/game times are always changing?
There are many reasons why schedules get changed. A big reason for it is less participation in sports overall. Each Spring AD’s plan for JV and Varsity games for the following year. However, fewer athletes seem to be going out for sports so by the beginning of the season there might only be half of the schools with a JV team. Throughout the season JV numbers sometimes drop below the required amount to hold a contest. When this happens, games get cancelled so game times change as late as the day of the contest. Another reason for schedule changes are lack of officials. The number of folks willing to be referees is dwindling all over the country due to abuse of officials or the time commitment involved. Just last weekend a game between Hellgate and Helena High was stopped before the end of regulation because of unruly fans. Most officials have full time jobs so when they contact the AD about changing times because they can’t find officials to cover games there is not much anyone can do about that. A third reason is lack of bus drivers. There are many times when a driver has to drop off the team then drive back to the home school to run the bus route then go back to get the team. These are just 3 of the main issues that force schools to rearrange schedules. Other impacts are regionalized scheduling, cultural events, weather events, illness issues, and lack of game administration for clocks, books, line judges, etc. We have been relatively lucky this year with scheduling. It is something we try to keep up with on facebook and emails when there are changes. Until participation increases, there are more officials, and there are more bus drivers you can expect more of the same in the years to come.
