Connecting an Android phone to the Charlo Wireless network takes two steps: installing the school’s security certificate, and then filling in the network settings by hand. You’ll need your school username and password.
Android phones from different manufacturers—Samsung, Google, Motorola—label these settings differently and put them in different places. The field names below are what you’re looking for. If a menu on your phone doesn’t match exactly, look for something close.
Step 1: Install the certificate
- Tap this link to download the certificate. If your phone asks where to save it, the
Downloadsfolder is fine. - Open the
Settingsapp. - Search for
certificateusing the search box at the top of Settings. Tap the result namedInstall a certificate,Install from device storage, orInstall from phone storage. - Choose
Wi-Fi certificateorCA certificate. If your phone warns you that your data won’t be private, tapInstall anyway. - Select the
CHARLO-Root-CA.cerfile you downloaded in step 1. - If you’re asked to name the certificate, name it
Charlo Root CA.
If your phone asks you to set a screen lock (PIN, pattern, or fingerprint) before it will install the certificate, you have to set one. Android requires it.
Step 2: Connect to the network
- In
Settings, go toNetwork & internet→Internet, orConnections→Wi-Fi. - Tap
Charlo Wirelessin the list of networks. - Fill in the fields as follows:
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| EAP method | PEAP |
| Phase 2 authentication | MSCHAPV2 |
| CA certificate | Charlo Root CA (the one you installed in step 1) |
| Online Certificate Status | Do not verify or leave as-is |
| Domain | MIDGARD.CHARLO.priv |
| Identity | Your school username |
| Anonymous identity | Leave this blank |
| Password | Your school password |
- Tap
Connect.
Two fields cause most of the trouble:
- Anonymous identity. Some phones fill this in automatically with the word
anonymous. Delete it and leave the field empty. - Domain. This field often stays hidden until after you’ve selected the CA certificate. If you don’t see it, go back and make sure the
CA certificatefield is set first.
If it doesn’t work
- If you see
Authentication problemor the phone connects and immediately disconnects, double-check your username and password, and make sure theAnonymous identityfield is empty. - If the
CA certificatefield only offersUse system certificatesorDo not validate, the certificate didn’t install. Go back to step 1 and try again. - Still stuck? Come see the IT Director with your phone and we’ll get it sorted out.
